Next month Apple is releasing the new OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 for $19.99
http://www.apple.com/osx/

This is the least expensive System upgrade I have seen.

Important:
Check the specs on which computer Mountain Lion will run on to make sure you can upgrade your computer to the new system.

Here is the information from the Apple page on which computers will run Mountain Lion.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)

Will and Gemma,

That's great.
Let us know how you like it and/or what you don't like if you run into anything.

It seems to be a solid system with many new features.
I am enjoying it.

Hi Joe ~
yes, we like the new tab organizing system utilized in Mountain Lion when surfing the web. its a nice upgrade and helps us stay organized and its easier to see where you've been and also to back track. seems very useful and truly a great advantage for surfers.

There are some nice changes in email that help keep our responses organized and acknowledged. for example, you no longer need to go into sent mail anymore to see what your response was.....its right there.... Thats really nice :-)

We are enjoying Mountain Lion ~ and as you mentioned earlier, this will not install on our older iMac from 2006....ouch. that one is still running pretty strong, so we hope it wont matter too much....hopefully should be fine for a while longer :)

This has been an easy transition. so far no problems and it seems like a smooth and stable OS upgrade :-)
