Is your Mac infected? [Discussions or Help for Apple Computers]

There has been a lot of talk lately about the supposed 600,000 Mac users that are infected with the Flashback Malware.

Always lots of rumors and scares put into people so they want to run out and buy Anti-Virus software. Some of these scares are created by people who want to sell you Anti-Virus software...

Having said that, you probably are not infected as long as you haven't downloaded anything from strange places you aren't familiar with.
To check for the malware, use the link below which is the MacWorld magazine website online. I have always trusted MacWorld.

http://www.macworld.com/article/1166278/free_flashback_checker_finds_out_if_your_mac_is_infected.html

I checked my machine using the terminal commands and my machine was clean.
Here are the commands I ran from the link above.
You can copy and paste the line of code below into a terminal window...
1. Run the following command in Terminal:
defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

8. Run the following command in Terminal:
defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

I also keep my machine up to date using the Software Update feature of the Mac. Apple released two Java updates last week to take care of the security threat. If you haven't updated your machine, do so now....

10.8 Mountain Lion announced today [Discussions or Help for Apple Computers]

Apple announced the upcoming new OS X named "Mountain Lion".
This will be released this summer.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/

For those of you that don't even have Lion yet, you might start thinking about upgrading if your computer can run Lion....
Just remember, when upgrading to Lion, you may also need to upgrade some of your older applications.

Here are a couple I had to update.
1. Quicken 2006 to Quicken Essentials
http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/mac-personal-financial-software.jsp
You can also buy it directly from the Mac App Store on your computer for the same price.

2. AppleWorks to iWork (this includes Keynote, Pages, Numbers)
You can buy these separately from the Mac Apple Store on your computer for $19.99 each and you can also download the trial version here:
http://www.apple.com/iwork/

Also released today is "Messages" for Apple Computers running Lion...
This joins iChat with the new Messages which allows you to send iMessages to other computers, iPhones,
iPads and iPod Touches....
http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/messages-beta/

The application, iChat, is deleted but the old iChat window and buddy list is still the same.
It is just now incorporated within the new "Messages" application...

Life moves on........

10.7 Lion is out today [Discussions or Help for Apple Computers]

Well, I guess no one else is running Lion yet.

I have now installed it on 2 of my computers and they seem to be doing fine.

A couple of things to watch out for before upgrading is any old software you have that you still are using. Old PPC software will NOT work with Lion.....

I had to update Quicken so it was compatible with Lion.
I also need to update Microsoft Word/Excel/etc. if I want to use them with Lion as my version '98 is not compatible. So far I don't need Microsoft so I haven't updated that....

AppleWorks will no longer work and there are no updates.
I am going to miss that for several things I used to do.

Other than that, Lion runs good and has some nice new features.

I would like to hear any stories from other users.

10.7 Lion has been released today via the App Store.. $29.99
http://www.apple.com/macosx/

The new way to purchase software is through the Mac App Store.
No more boxed versions of software to buy, we just download it from the App Store.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-lion/id444303913?mt=12&ls=1

I am running it on a separate Hard Drive to test it out. Some changes that some will like and other changes may be more challenging to adjust to.

Anyone running Lion yet?
